Insomniac: Instructions on how to stop a heart from bleeding

09 Nov

What doesn’t work
I’ve tried sewing it shut, but its will is big
The suchers broke open: it bleeds

I’ve tried packing it with cotton, but it keeps beating too strong
The packing soaked through: it bleeds

I’ve tried cauterizing it with a hot knife, but it’s stronger than me
It only sprung several more leaks: it bleeds

The anesthetist
Someone gave me a shot plus many more, but it was too sad
It cried salty tears add to the bloody mess: it hurts

Someone gave me a new love, but it screamed—IMPOSTER!
A lobe shattered apart from the trauma: it hurts

Someone gave me a pill plus many more, but it was too sober
It puked out all the rainbow of colors: it hurts

The amputation
I took out a scalpel to extract that part, which was you, but it saw me coming
It moved and hid in another part of my chest: it lives on

I took out a torch to set each vein ablaze—to stop the life force, but it’s too vindictive
The damn heart is too frozen to burn: it lives on

I took out a mallet to beat the fucking thing to death, but it was smarter than me
It flattened and slithered into my dreams: it lives on…

But not while I’m awake.
